- The Tractor that Keeps on Giving
Tractors, the work horses of farmers, serve as mowers, garden plows, and snow plows. They also pull utility wagons and help with many tasks around the property. Occasionally, they might serve as transportation like the time George Jones' rode his tractor to town after his wife hid his car keys. There are even tractor clubs to display the importance of these versatile machines, and members don't mind telling others that they love their tractors. I am one of those proud members of the tractor club in Whitfield County and am lucky enough to own two tractors, one that I bought and one that has a very special history. This second tractor, a 1952 Farmall Cub, once belonged to my brother, Clay. About fifteen years ago, when Clay's wife died, his two daughters approached me about taking Clay's tractor because they were afraid that he would have an accident on it when no one else was around. At first I was hesitant, but they assured me by repeating over and over, "Pop does not need such a big garden, and he does not need that tractor." Clay's son-in-law also encouraged me to take the tractor because Clay wanted me to have it. This tractor, now sixty years old, is still in excellent condition and will crank on demand. I get great pleasure sitting on such a fine piece of equipment that is almost as old as I am, and I will continue to do what needs to be done to keep it in good running condition. Many club members have asked if I would be willing to sell this beauty, but my answer has always been an emphatic NO! I have often wondered what will happen to this tractor when I am no longer around. Happily, I have found someone else in my family who also loves this old treasure. When my brother Clay died, his grandson Jeremy asked if I still had the tractor because he has fond memories of riding it while sitting proudly on his grandfather's lap. We continued to talk for quite a while, and I knew that I had found my answer to prayer. I said to Jeremy, "I am going to leave instructions in my will that you get this tractor when I die." Jeremy seemed extremely excited, and I knew instantly that I had made the right decision. My old tractor would one day have a new owner who would love and care for it as much as I do. To my surprise, my great nephew and his young son recently visited me. As he sat holding his son on the tractor, I smiled as I pictured Jeremy sitting with his grandfather many years ago. I love thinking about the past, and I love knowing that my tractor will have a great future.

Never met a stranger... Pop always said if you walk into a room full of strangers, you better know each one before you walk out. That is the way he was, he never met a stranger. He loved people of all ages. From playing Santa Claus to helping kids in need to cutting up firewood so someone could make it through the cold winter- helping folks and spending time with his family... that was his priorities in life.
His life was consumed with groups and organizations that he loved being a part of. He was in the Optimist Club in Cartersville, Yaarah Temple, Alhambra Temple, Rome Shrine Club, Adairsville Masonic Lodge, Red Fez Club in Soddy Daisy, TN, Peach State Tractor Club, Gordon County Tractor Club. Going to Chester Frost every year to grind corn and grits was a highlight of his. Spending time at their place at Red Fez club was a major priority.
His zest for life was infectious to all who came in contact with him. He would go out of his way to find a hospital bed, walker or whatever someone needed to make their life easier.
Pop- you were one of a kind and you will be truly missed. Thank you for the memories... you always said memories will always carry you through anything. We have you to thank for some great ones. Love you so very much.
ALWAYS AND FOREVER... see you in Heaven.
